Cookie Policy

Plain-English summary first, full detail below.

This Cookie Policy explains how briefowler.com uses cookies and similar browser storage technologies. The short version: we use far less than most websites. We set no advertising or tracking cookies, load no third-party analytics, and keep just two small functional values in your browser.

In plain English

  • We do not use advertising, tracking or third-party cookies of any kind.
  • We store only your consent banner choice and, briefly, your first name for the thank-you page.
  • Numbers you type into our calculators are never stored or sent anywhere.
  • If we ever add analytics, they will run only after you say yes.

1. What cookies and browser storage are

Cookies are small text files that a website asks your browser to save on your device. They are sent back to the website each time you visit, which allows it to remember things such as your login or preferences. Many websites also use cookies from other companies (third-party cookies) to track visitors across different websites for analytics or advertising.

Local storage and session storage are related browser features (often called "web storage"). They let a website save small pieces of information on your device. Unlike cookies, the information is not automatically sent to the website's server with every request; it stays in your browser and can only be read by pages from the same website.

  • localStorage keeps information until you, or the website, delete it.
  • sessionStorage keeps information only for as long as the browser tab is open, and clears it automatically when you close the tab.

Privacy laws such as the EU ePrivacy Directive and the UK Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR) treat all of these technologies in a similar way, so this policy covers them all. Where we say "cookies" below, we mean cookies and web storage together.

2. What this site uses

briefowler.com is a static website. All of its files, including fonts, images and scripts, are hosted on our own site. We do not load any third-party analytics, advertising pixels, social media widgets, embedded videos, external fonts or external scripts, so no other company can place cookies on your device through our Site.

The Site does not set any HTTP cookies. It uses your browser's web storage for exactly two purposes:

KeyPurposeTypeDuration
bo-consentRemembers the choice you made in our consent banner, so we do not ask you again on every pageFirst-party localStorage; strictly necessaryUntil you clear your browser storage or change your choice
bo-nameHolds the first name you entered in the contact form, so the thank-you page can greet you by nameFirst-party sessionStorage; functionalCleared automatically when you close the browser tab

Neither value is used to identify you across websites, and neither is shared with anyone. The bo-name value is only set when you submit the contact form yourself. The details you submit through the form are handled as described in our Privacy Policy.

What we do not store

Our free calculators on the tools page (the money-leak finder, debt payoff snowball vs avalanche calculator, emergency-fund calculator and savings-goal timeline) run entirely in your browser. The figures you enter are not stored in cookies or web storage and are not sent to us. If you reload or close the page, they are gone.

Third-party services outside our Site

When you pay for a course or service, you may be taken to a checkout page run by our payment processor (for example, Stripe). Coaching sessions take place on a video-call platform (for example, Zoom or Google Meet), and bookings may be made through a scheduling tool. Those services are not part of briefowler.com and may set their own cookies, for example to prevent fraud or keep you signed in. Their use of cookies is governed by their own cookie and privacy policies.

When you first visit the Site, you will see a short banner explaining how we use browser storage. Your choice is saved under the bo-consent key so that the banner does not appear on every page.

Because we currently use only storage that is strictly necessary or that you trigger yourself by submitting a form, the Site works in the same way whatever you choose. The banner exists so that you are informed, and so that we are ready to ask for your permission properly if we ever introduce anything optional.

You can change your mind at any time by clearing your browser storage for briefowler.com (see section 5). The banner will then appear again on your next visit.

4. Future analytics: only with your consent

At the moment, we do not use any analytics. If we decide in future to measure how the Site is used, we will:

  • choose a privacy-friendly analytics tool that does not track you across other websites or build advertising profiles;
  • load it only after you have given consent through the banner, and never before;
  • respect a Global Privacy Control signal from your browser as a refusal, unless you actively opt in;
  • make it as easy to withdraw consent as it was to give it; and
  • update this Cookie Policy and our Privacy Policy before it goes live, listing any new keys or cookies in the table above.

We will never add advertising cookies or sell information about your visits.

5. How to manage and clear cookies and storage

You are always in control of what is stored in your browser. You can:

  • Close the tab to clear bo-name automatically.
  • Clear site data for briefowler.com to remove both bo-consent and bo-name. Most browsers let you do this by clicking the padlock or site-information icon next to the web address and choosing the option to clear cookies and site data.
  • Clear all browsing data through your browser's privacy settings.
  • Block storage for all websites or for specific sites. If you block web storage on our Site, it will still work, but you will see the consent banner each time and the thank-you page will not greet you by name.
  • Use a private or incognito window, in which storage is discarded when you close the window.

Instructions for popular browsers:

For general guidance on online tracking and how to protect your privacy, see the US Federal Trade Commission's consumer advice at consumer.ftc.gov.

6. Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control

Our Site does not track you across other websites, so a Do Not Track signal does not change anything here. We honour Global Privacy Control (GPC) signals as described in our Privacy Policy. If we ever introduce consent-based analytics, a GPC signal will be treated as a refusal unless you actively opt in.

7. Changes to this policy

We will update this Cookie Policy if we change how the Site uses cookies or browser storage, for example if we add consent-based analytics. Any new cookie or storage key will be added to the table in section 2 before it is used, and we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. If a change requires your consent, we will ask for it through the banner.
